Wampler Ego Compressor
Wampler · CompressionThe Wampler Ego at moderate Sustain (5–6) with slow Attack and Blend at 60–70% provides the rock compression balance — enough sustain extension for lead work without squashing the pick attack. The Tone control allows brightening the compressed signal to compensate for the slight darkening that compression can produce.
Rock settings on this unit:
Light compression with slow Attack — the blues application for compression is primarily sustain enhancement rather than dynamic limiting. Sustain 4 adds moderate compression; Attack 6 (slow) allows the pick attack to pass through uncompressed, preserving the dynamic feel of blues playing. Blend 6 maintains transparency.
Strengths
- Blend control preserves pick attack for aggressive rock playing
- Tone control compensates for any darkening from compression
- Wide Sustain range covers both subtle rhythm compression and more pronounced lead sustain
Worth knowing
More controls to manage than simpler alternatives — for players who want to set it and forget it, the MXR Dyna Comp or Boss CS-3 offers simpler operation.
