Catalinbread Belle Epoch
Catalinbread · DelayThe Catalinbread Belle Epoch is the most accurate Echoplex recreation available — and the Echoplex is the tape echo used by Gilmour and Hendrix to create the most iconic blues lead tones in history. The Belle Epoch's preamp stage warms and compresses the dry signal even without echo, providing the characteristic Echoplex tone enhancement that players describe as making the amp sound "more alive".
Blues settings on this unit:
The Belle Epoch's sweet spot — warm tape-echo repeats at moderate levels. The Echo Volume at 5 keeps the echo audible but below the dry signal. Record at 6 adds brightness to the echo repeats. Sustain at 4 produces 3–4 warm, degrading repeats. The EP-3 character adds warmth to the dry signal as well.
Strengths
- Echoplex-accurate tape echo character — the most important blues lead delay device in history
- Preamp stage enhances dry tone even with Echo Volume at 0 — always-on tone improvement
- Warm, naturally degrading repeats that suit blues lead playing better than clean digital delay
Worth knowing
More expensive than simpler analog delay alternatives for equivalent echo applications. Justified when the Echoplex preamp warmth and tape character are specifically the target.
