Tone Bender Mk II
Sola Sound / Various Builders · FuzzThe Tone Bender MKII is the definitive classic rock fuzz — it's the circuit Jimmy Page used on Led Zeppelin's early recordings and Jeff Beck used extensively. Its three-transistor germanium circuit produces a rich, harmonically complex fuzz that interacts uniquely with tube amp input stages. At moderate Attack it produces musical, singing lead tone; at full Attack it delivers the heavy Page-style rhythm fuzz.
Strengths
- The canonical classic rock fuzz — the direct circuit of early Led Zeppelin, Cream, and the British blues explosion
- Harmonically rich character beyond what the Fuzz Face produces — more complex saturation
- Interacts beautifully with pushed tube amps — the combination produces the classic rock fuzz tone
Worth knowing
Germanium transistors are temperature-sensitive — the Tone Bender requires warm-up time and may drift in cold conditions. Allow 10–15 minutes for stabilization before gigging, particularly in cold climates.
