Maestro Fuzz-Tone FZ-1 Settings Guide
The first commercially available fuzz pedal — introduced by Gibson in 1962 and designed by Glen Snotty, the FZ-1 used three germanium transistors in a circuit that produced the crunchy, broken fuzz sound Keith Richards used on "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965). The FZ-1 defined the vocabulary of fuzz before the EHX Big Muff or Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face existed. Unlike later silicon-transistor fuzzes, the germanium FZ-1 produces a warm, compressed fuzz with a distinct attack character — notes bloom from attack to sustain in a way that silicon transistors cannot reproduce. Attack near maximum — the FZ-1's defining character requires the germanium transistors to be driven hard. The worn, buzzy, broken fuzz character (not smooth sustain — intentionally rough and harmonically complex) is only accessible at high Attack settings. Volume at 7 matches the unity level of a typical guitar amp. This is the Keith Richards "Satisfaction" territory.
Attack at 6 — slightly reduced from maximum for a warmer, more harmonic fuzz that retains some dynamic response. The FZ-1 at Attack 6 produces a fuzz that breaks up more gently than the maximum setting, allowing pick-attack dynamics to partially clean up the fuzz character.
