Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9
Ibanez · OverdriveThe TS9 is the canonical blues overdrive. At Drive 0 and Level above unity it pushes a tube amp into natural saturation without adding its own clipping character — this is the SRV approach. At Drive 3–5 it adds the TS's famous mid-hump, which pushes lead tones forward in a blues band mix. Stacking two Tube Screamers (the SRV move on his lead channel) adds compression and sustain without excessive distortion.
Blues settings on this unit:
Low Drive pushing a tube amp into natural breakup — this is the SRV approach. The TS's bass cut tightens the amp's low end; higher Tone restores some high-end clarity for note definition.
Strengths
- Drive 0 + Level high = transparent clean boost that tightens the amp's low end
- Mid-hump character pushes lead notes forward in a dense blues band mix
- The genre standard — a reference tone known to every blues guitarist and engineer
Worth knowing
The TS9 cuts bass even at Drive 0. This tightens most amps but can make single-coil guitars on bright amps sound thin. Set the Tone to 6–7 to compensate.
