Ibanez Tube Screamer TS9
Ibanez · OverdriveThe TS9 into a high-gain amp is the single most established metal boost technique — Gain at 0, Level at 8–10, Tone at 5. The TS9's slight mid boost tightens the amp's gain and adds note definition; its slight bass cut reduces low-end flub common in high-gain metal amps. James Hetfield used a TS-style pedal in front of his Mesa Rectifier, and countless touring metal players do the same.
Strengths
- The definitive metal amp boost technique — used by more metal players than any other overdrive
- Slight mid boost adds note definition and separation to high-gain amp saturation
- Slight bass cut tightens the low end — reduces flub and muddiness in metal riffing
Worth knowing
The TS9's mid boost doesn't suit every metal amp — into amps that are already very mid-forward, it can become too thick. Into scooped amps (Mesa Rectifier), it adds exactly the definition the scooped character lacks.
