About the Whammy
The DigiTech Whammy pioneered real-time pitch shifting for guitarists in 1989 and remains irreplaceable on its creator Tom Morello's pedalboard. The expression pedal sweeps pitch shifts up or down by defined intervals — one octave, two octaves, a fifth — creating the dive-bomb whammy bar effects, harmonized leads, and alien sonic manipulations that define Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Jack White and Jonny Greenwood also use it for distinctive whammy effects.
