Guitar Pickups Explained — Everything You Need to Know
The pickup is the most important single component in an electric guitar. It captures the vibration of the strings and converts it into the electrical signal that the amplifier receives. The pickup's design determines the frequency content, output level, noise characteristics, and fundamental character of everything that follows in the signal chain.

How Guitar Pickups Work
A guitar pickup is built around a permanent magnet — either a bar magnet under all strings or individual slug magnets for each string. Around this magnet is wound thousands of turns of very thin insulated copper wire (the coil).
When a steel guitar string vibrates over the magnet, it disturbs the magnetic field around the magnet. This changing magnetic flux induces a small alternating voltage in the coil — according to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. This voltage is the electrical signal output of the pickup.
The amplitude of this voltage depends on:
- How much the string moves (amplitude of vibration)
- The strength of the magnetic field
- The number of turns in the coil (more turns = more output)
- How close the string is to the magnet (pickup height)
The frequency of this voltage corresponds to the frequency of the string's vibration — which is the musical pitch.
Single Coil Pickups
Single coil pickups are the oldest type of electric guitar pickup, appearing in the 1930s in the Charlie Christian-era Gibson ES-150. They use a single coil of wire wound around the magnetic assembly.
Tonal characteristics:
- High end: Bright and detailed. Single coils capture high frequencies particularly well, producing the "chime" and "sparkle" characteristic of Fender instruments.
- Midrange: Present but not dominant — single coils have a scooped midrange quality compared to humbuckers
- Low end: Defined but not thick — bass notes are clear and articulate rather than heavy
- Dynamics: Very responsive to playing dynamics. Pick hard and the output increases significantly. Pick softly and it cleans up. This touch sensitivity is the defining characteristic of single coils for many players.

Humbucker Pickups
The humbucker was invented by Seth Lover at Gibson in 1955, patented in 1959, and introduced on Gibson guitars from 1957. The name refers to its primary function: cancelling (bucking) the hum of single coil designs.
How humbuckers work: Two coils are wound in opposite directions and wired in series with opposite magnetic polarity. The electromagnetic interference (hum) that each coil picks up is identical in each coil. When the coils are combined, the hum signals are out of phase and cancel each other. The guitar signal, which originates from string vibration rather than electromagnetic interference, does not cancel — it is reinforced by the two coils working together.
Tonal characteristics:
- High end: Warmer and more rolled-off than single coils. Less "chime," more "warmth"
- Midrange: Prominent midrange presence — humbuckers emphasise the 800Hz-2kHz range that gives notes body and sustain

Active Pickups

- Consistent output regardless of pickup height

The type of magnet used affects the pickup's character significantly:
Alnico magnets (aluminium-nickel-cobalt alloy): The original pickup magnet type. Several grades exist:
- Alnico 2: Weak magnet, produces a warm, smooth, vintage sound. Less attack than stronger magnets.
- Alnico 5: The most common grade. Balanced, open sound. Used in most vintage-spec pickups.
- Alnico 8: Stronger, tighter, more aggressive than Alnico 5.
