Most guitarists set amp EQ incorrectly. This guide explains what bass, mid, treble, presence, and resonance actually do — and gives you a starting point for any amp and any style.

Most guitarists spend their money on gear and almost no time learning how to set the amp. The result is expensive equipment sounding mediocre, and cheap equipment getting the blame for problems the EQ caused.

The amp's tone controls are the most powerful tools in your signal chain. Understanding what they actually do — not what the labels suggest, but what is physically happening — changes everything.


Start Here: The Noon Rule

Before anything else, set every control to twelve o'clock. Both channel volumes, master volume, bass, mid, treble, presence, reverb — everything to noon.

Then play.

This is your baseline. The amp's character without your preferences on top of it. From here you make small adjustments in one direction to hear what each control does. The noon rule prevents the most common beginner mistake: setting each control to what looks good and wondering why the sound is bad.


What Bass Actually Does

The bass control boosts or cuts low frequencies, typically centred around 100Hz. On most amps, maximum bass does not just add warmth — it adds boominess and mud that blurs note definition and makes the amp sound worse in a mix.

Common mistake: Turning bass up too high because the amp sounds thin at bedroom volume. This is the Fletcher-Munson effect: at low volume, human hearing perceives bass as quieter than it is at gigging volume. If you dial in lots of bass at home, the amp will be uncontrollably muddy at rehearsal.

Practical starting point: Bass between 5 and 7 (on a 1-10 scale) for most styles. Blues and jazz players can go a little higher. Metal players often go lower than noon to tighten the low end.


What Treble Actually Does

Treble boosts high frequencies, typically centred around 3–5kHz. Too much treble makes the amp sharp, piercing, and fatiguing. Too little makes it dull and indistinct.

Treble interacts heavily with gain. As gain increases, the amp naturally emphasises high frequencies. If you are adding gain, reduce treble slightly to compensate.

Single coil pickups (Strat, Tele) are inherently brighter than humbuckers. With single coils, you will often need less treble than with humbuckers.

Practical starting point: Treble at noon for humbuckers. Treble slightly below noon (4-5) for bright single coils. Adjust from there.


What Mid Does — And Why You Should Not Scoop It

The mid control is the most misunderstood of the three. It covers the frequency range (typically 500Hz–2kHz) where the guitar's character lives. It is also where the guitar sits in a band mix.

The scooped mids mistake: In the 1990s, the sound of an "extreme" mid scoop became associated with modern metal — the Metallica "Black Album" tone, the Mesa/Boogie rectifier sound. Many players adopted scooped mids as a default. The result: a scooped tone that sounds impressive in isolation but disappears completely in a band mix because the frequencies it needs to be heard are removed.

Why mids matter: Mids are where your guitar cuts through drums, bass, and keys. A mid-heavy tone from a Marshall, a Vox, or a Fender with the mids up sounds full and present in a mix at every volume. A scooped tone needs to be louder to be heard.

Practical starting point: Mids at noon or slightly above. If you play metal and genuinely want the scooped character, use it carefully and expect to compensate with volume.


What Presence Does

Presence is a high-frequency control that affects the power amp stage, not the preamp. It adds air and definition to the upper register — the crispness of a pick attack, the clarity of harmonics on a lead note.

Presence is different from treble in feel: treble adds brightness throughout the frequency range, while presence adds sparkle specifically to the upper attack frequencies. Too much presence makes the tone harsh and edgy. Too little makes it dull at the top.

Practical starting point: Noon. Increase if the sound is warm but lacks definition. Decrease if the attack feels harsh.


What Resonance Does

Not all amps have a resonance control, but those that do use it to affect the low-frequency response of the power amp stage. It adds depth and weight to the bottom without the boominess of the bass control.

Resonance interacts with the room. In a small room, high resonance sounds boomy. In a large room or outdoor venue, it adds the weight that would otherwise be absorbed by the space.

Practical starting point: Noon. Reduce for small rooms, increase for large venues.


Gain vs Volume — The Most Confused Controls

On two-channel amps and many single-channel amps with a master volume, there are two level controls. Understanding the difference is fundamental.

Gain (or "drive"): Controls how hard the preamp stage is driven. High gain = more distortion from the preamp tubes. This is a tone control, not just a volume control.

Volume (or "master volume"): Controls the output level of the power amp stage. This determines how loud the amp is in the room.

The relationship: High gain + low master volume = lots of preamp distortion at low volume. Low gain + high master volume = natural power amp saturation at high volume (the way classic rock was recorded). High gain + high master volume = maximum saturation at maximum volume (not appropriate for most situations).

For the best tone from a tube amp, many engineers recommend using less preamp gain than you think you need and pushing the master volume higher to let the power amp work properly.


EQ Settings by Style

These are starting points, not prescriptions. Every amp, room, and guitar is different.

Blues:

  • Bass: 6, Mid: 7, Treble: 5, Presence: 6
  • Gain: 3-5 depending on how much natural saturation you want
  • Goal: warm, dynamic, responds to picking attack

Classic Rock:

  • Bass: 6, Mid: 6, Treble: 6, Presence: 6
  • Gain: 5-7
  • Goal: full-bodied with sustain, still articulate on lead

Country:

  • Gain: 2-3 (mostly clean)

Metal:

Jazz:

The Room Changes Everything

The same amp sounds different in every room. A bright, slightly harsh tone in a carpeted, soft-furnished bedroom may sound exactly right on a live stage with reflective walls and a hard floor.

When setting your amp, always account for the acoustic environment you will actually be playing in. Rehearsal rooms are typically reverberant and bright — set up there and the tone that sounds right in the room will often sound correct on stage.

Home settings are typically too flat and too dead acoustically. Add a room simulation plugin or reverb pedal if you need to hear how the amp will sound in a live environment.
