  • Ratio: 2:1 to 3:1

  • Level: Matched to bypassed volume

Country Chicken-Picking Compression

Country guitar uses heavy compression to produce the characteristic snap-and-sustain quality of chicken-picked notes.

  • Threshold: Low (almost everything gets compressed)
  • Ratio: 4:1 to 6:1
  • Attack: Slow (15-30ms) — let the initial snap through
  • Release: 100ms
  • Level: +3-6dB above bypassed (the compressor also acts as a volume boost)

Funk Rhythm Compression

  • Ratio: 4:1
  • Attack: Fast (5-10ms)
  • Release: 50-80ms (fast release to track the fast rhythm)
  • Level: Unity

Signal Chain Position

Compressor goes first, before your drive pedals:

Guitar → Compressor → Overdrive/Wah → Delay → Reverb → Amp

Why first:

  • The compressor receives the cleanest signal and most accurately controls the dynamics
  • If the compressor is after distortion, it compresses an already-distorted signal, which produces a different character (useful in some contexts but not the standard approach)

Exception: Some players put the compressor after overdrive for a specific heavily-sustained effect. Experiment both ways.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I hear my compressor? A well-set compressor should be almost inaudible when playing. You will notice it when you bypass it — the dynamics become more exaggerated and the sustain reduces. If you cannot hear a difference at all, your threshold may be set too high for your playing dynamics.

Why does my compressor sound "pumpy"? The release time is too short. The compressor is cycling on and off rapidly enough to be audible. Increase the release time until the pumping stops.
