Guitarists talk about "tone" constantly — chasing it, describing it, comparing it. New players often assume it is primarily a matter of gear. Professional players know it is not. Understanding what tone actually is — and what determines it — is fundamental to improving your sound.
What "Tone" Means
In a musical context, "tone" refers to the quality and character of a sound — not just its pitch, but everything about its character: how bright or dark it is, how much sustain it has, how responsive it is to the player's touch, how full or thin it sounds.
Every guitar player produces a characteristic tone — a combination of the physical characteristics of their gear and the specific way they interact with it through technique.
