Running with the Devil

Eddie Van Halen · Van Halen · 1978

What Makes This Sound Unique

The debut album's most straightforward rock tone — Frankenstrat rhythm parts with the full Plexi saturation, but structured as a conventional song rather than a solo showcase. Shows EVH's rhythm playing versatility.

Full "brown sound" — the variac-dropped Plexi at maximum. Slightly more bass than Eruption to support the driving rhythm part. The humbucker-into-Plexi combination with voltage reduction produces a unique compression character.

How to Play It

Tight down-picking for the driving verse riff — Van Halen's rhythm playing is often overlooked in favour of his solo work, but his right-hand precision is exceptional.

Achievable With

Humbucker guitar + MXR EVH 5150 Overdrive into a bright, clean amp (Fender-style). The variac effect can be approximated with a power attenuator cranked.
