What Makes This Sound Unique

One of Zappa's most celebrated slow-burning guitar showcases — a minor blues at slow tempo that gives him room to deploy every expressive tool: vibrato, feedback, harmonic squeals, and long sustaining notes. The sustain in Black Napkins is partly from amp volume and partly from proximity feedback — Zappa positioned himself close enough to the amp that sustained notes fed back naturally. Lower presence than Muffin Man for a warmer sound suited to the slow bluesy tempo.

Technique

How to Play It

Deliberate use of feedback as a sustain extension — holding the guitar at a specific angle to the amp allows specific notes to feed back indefinitely. This requires knowing which note on which fret will feed back at your amp volume.

Budget Alternative

Achievable With

Humbucker guitar → Marshall at high volume or Wampler Plexi-Drive → Roland RE-201 or Boss RE-20 Space Echo → stand close to the amp for feedback. A Boss CS-3 compressor helps replicate the sustain at lower volumes.
