Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
The most vocal, singing guitar tone in rock — Beck's Stratocaster through a Marshll (no pedals) produces sounds that seem to speak words. The technique is all in the volume knob and tremolo arm, not effects.
Signal Chain
- 1Fender Stratocaster (neck pickup, volume at 6)
- 2Marshall amp (moderate gain)
Amp Settings
Beck runs the amp into light crunch, then uses the guitar volume knob to swell notes in and out. The tremolo arm adds micro-pitch inflections that no vibrato can replicate.
Technique
How to Play It
Volume swells with the guitar volume knob using the side of the picking hand little finger — the note blooms after the initial pick attack, eliminating the transient and making it sound like a singing voice.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Any Strat into a lightly overdriven amp. This is 90% technique — specifically the volume knob swell and tremolo arm micro-bends.
