Rape Me
Kurt Cobain · In Utero · 1993
Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
The anti-anthem from In Utero — intentionally raw and lo-fi in contrast to the more polished Nevermind production. Steve Albini's recording philosophy captured the amp in the room rather than processing it into something smooth. The DS-1 and Mesa Studio Pre combination produces a deliberately abrasive distortion.

- 2Boss DS-1 Distortion (gain pushed)
- 3Mesa Boogie Studio Pre (high gain)

Amp Settings
Steve Albini recorded In Utero with minimal processing — the guitar tone is the room sound of the amp at high volume with little studio treatment. The rawness is intentional and captures the adversarial spirit of the record.
Technique
How to Play It
Simple, direct chord playing with no ornamentation — Kurt's stated ambition for In Utero was to strip away Nevermind's polish. The playing is deliberately unadorned and aggressive.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Jaguar or Mustang → Boss DS-1 (gain at 8) → any amp at moderate-to-high volume → mic the amp with minimal studio processing. Avoid heavy compression or EQ — the rawness is the point.
