Luther Allison — Tone Evolution
Luther Allison was a Chicago-born blues guitarist who found his greatest success in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, returning to American success in the 1990s. His electric guitar approach was raw and physical — a Stratocaster through a Marshall with intense vibrato and aggressive string bending.
1969–1975: Delmark Records / Chicago Blues
Allison's Delmark recordings (Love Me Mama, 1969; Bad News Is Coming, 1972) established him in Chicago blues circles. His Stratocaster through a Marshall was unusually heavy for blues guitar — he'd absorbed more rock influence than most contemporaries. His live performances were known for intensity and duration (he regularly played three-hour sets).

1975–1997: European Career / Soul Fixin' Man
↑ European exile and American return confirmed the gap between Blues commercial recognition and musical quality — Allison was significant throughout.
Allison moved to France in 1975 and built a substantial European following while being largely ignored in America. Soul Fixin' Man (1994, Alligator) brought American recognition in his fifties. Blue Streak (1995) won multiple W.C. Handy Awards. He died of cancer in 1997, shortly after his American breakthrough. His son Bernard Allison continues his legacy.
