Matt Schofield — Tone Evolution
Matt Schofield is the UK's most celebrated contemporary blues guitarist — a Stax and Chicago blues scholar whose tone on the Collings semi-hollow through a Fuchs amplifier represents the highest current standard of British blues guitar.
2002–2008: Matt Schofield Trio
Schofield's early trio recordings established his blues foundation — rooted in Otis Rush, Magic Sam, and Robben Ford. He used a Gibson ES-335 through a Fender amp. His tone was warm, slightly compressed, with a wide vibrato influenced by his study of Chicago blues players. Live recordings showed his ability to build blues solos with genuine harmonic and emotional architecture, not just pentatonic noodling.

↑ Collings/Fuchs combination gave Schofield a distinctly personal tone — the Fuchs ODS's British character with American blues vocabulary created a sound that wasn't derivative of any single influence.
Schofield transitioned to Collings semi-hollow guitars (SJ or CL models) and Fuchs amplification — a combination that gave him a warmer, more resonant tone than the ES-335/Fender combination. His playing deepened: longer, more considered phrases, harmonic sophistication increasing. He has taught at Guitar Institute London and is widely considered the finest British blues guitarist of his generation.
