Mike Stern

Mike Stern — Tone Evolution

Mike Stern played in Miles Davis's early electric band (1981-83) and has built a career in jazz-fusion that bridges bebop vocabulary with rock energy. His Telecaster through a Music Man HD-130 combination became one of fusion's most recognisable electric guitar sounds.

1981–1987: Miles Davis / Jigsaw

Stern joined Miles Davis's band for The Man with the Horn (1981) and We Want Miles (1982 live) — a high-visibility launch for a guitarist in his late 20s. Miles's electric context demanded rock-influenced playing alongside jazz vocabulary — Stern's Telecaster through a Music Man amp was perfect: rock volume, jazz articulation. Jigsaw (1984) was his solo debut while still with Miles.

Post-accident Stern showed the resilience of deeply ingrained technique — recovery brought him back to the same Telecaster/Music Man identity he'd maintained for decades.

Stern has recorded extensively for Atlantic Jazz and Heads Up — Standards (2012) showed his bebop fluency, Loud (2015) returned to rock-fusion territory. He suffered serious injuries in a 2016 accident that affected his hands; his recovery and return to playing was celebrated. His Telecaster/Music Man combination has remained unchanged through his entire career.
