Nels Cline

Nels Cline — Tone Evolution

Nels Cline is Wilco's lead guitarist and a prolific avant-garde improviser who brings a noise/jazz/experimental approach to rock contexts. His Fender Jazzmaster through unusual effects processing creates textures that have expanded what is possible in rock guitar.

1978–2004: Avant-Garde Career / Pre-Wilco

Cline built his reputation in Los Angeles avant-garde and jazz circles through the 1980s and 1990s. The Nels Cline Singers (from 2001) documents his experimental approach — guitar as noise sculpture, jazz improvisation, and rock riff simultaneously. His Jazzmaster through Ebow, volume swells, and unusual effects created a distinctive sonic palette before Wilco.

2004–present: Wilco

Wilco context transformed experimental approach into radio-accessible context — avant-garde technique heard by mainstream audience.

Cline replaced Leroy Bach in Wilco for A Ghost Is Born (2004). Sky Blue Sky (2007), Wilco (the Album) (2009), and Schmilco (2016) each feature his guitar prominently — in Tweedy's song contexts, his experimental impulses become musical details rather than noise for its own sake.
