Nuno Bettencourt

Nuno Bettencourt — Tone Evolution

Nuno Bettencourt combined shred technique, funk rhythm feel, and pop melody in a way few guitarists achieved. His Washburn N4 — a custom design with a natural finish, Seymour Duncan pickup, and Floyd Rose — produced a tonal identity immediately recognisable: punchy, articulate, and harmonically rich.

1989–1992: Extreme / Pornograffitti

The Extreme debut and Pornograffitti were recorded with Nuno's Washburn N1 and the developing N4 prototype. The amp was a Marshall JCM 800 2203 pushed moderately hard — not the ultra-saturated approach of metal players, but enough to give the fast alternate-picking runs harmonic density. More Than Words was recorded entirely acoustically. Get the Funk Out demonstrated the clean fingerstyle funk rhythm that separated Nuno from pure shredders.

1992–1996: III Sides / Waiting for the Punchline

Roland VG-8 introduced for studio layering — Nuno was an early adopter of modelling for texture while keeping the core Marshall/N4 signal chain for primary tones.

The III Sides era consolidated the N4 as Nuno's primary guitar. He Road Comms added a Roland VG-8 guitar synthesizer alongside the Marshall for studio textures. The tone on Hip Today and Stop (Extreme's biggest hit) used the N4 into a Marshall with a Boss GE-7 equaliser for mid-boost. After Extreme's disbanding, Nuno's solo record Schizophonic used a broader palette including acoustic and classical-influenced fingerpicking.

2004–present: David Lee Roth / Extreme reunion

Marshall JVM410H added — four-channel versatility allows clean, crunch, OD1, OD2 from a single amp without switching rigs, suitable for Extreme's mix of clean funk and hard rock.

The David Lee Roth tour period and the Extreme reunion (Saudades de Rock, Six) saw Nuno using updated Washburn Nuno signature models with refined specifications — tighter fret work, faster profile, improved Floyd Rose variant. The amp moved to the Marshall JVM410H alongside the JCM 800 for live versatility. Extreme's Six album (2023) used a modern production approach but retained the N4 as the primary guitar throughout.
