Phil Collen

Phil Collen — Tone Evolution

Phil Collen is Def Leppard's lead guitarist and technical anchor — his two-handed tapping approach and precise picking influenced hard rock and glam metal guitar in the 1980s. A Guild Aviator and later a Jackson/Charvel through a Mesa Boogie are his signature rig. He is also known for practicing guitar twelve hours a day for most of his career.

1982–1987: Pyromania / Hysteria

Pyromania (1983) and Hysteria (1987) are two of the best-selling hard rock albums of the 1980s. Collen's guitar on both records — produced with Robert John "Mutt" Lange — is precise, layered, and technically demanding. "Pour Some Sugar on Me", "Rock of Ages", "Photograph": the riffs are constructed for maximum commercial punch. His Guild Aviator through a Mesa Boogie gave the clean-overdriven balance.

1987–present: Adrenalize / Continuing

Post-Clark era required Collen to carry more compositional weight — solo career demonstrated depth beyond Leppard's commercial production style.

Adrenalize (1992) was recorded in the shadow of Steve Clark's death from alcohol and pills. Collen stepped up to carry more of the guitar writing. Del Leppard's subsequent albums (Slang, Euphoria, Yeah!) maintained his technical approach. His Jackson signature and Mesa Boogie have remained his primary tools. He is also active with Delta Deep (blues band) showing a different side of his playing.
