Robert Fripp — Tone Evolution
Robert Fripp is King Crimson's founding guitarist and conceptualist — his tone has ranged from mellotron-accompanied acoustic lines to the "Frippertronics" tape loop solo performances to the heavy new-wave aggression of the 1981 Crimson. He is one of the few guitarists whose influence is more theoretical than tonal.
1969–1974: King Crimson Mk I–IV / Red
In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) introduced Fripp's primary approach: a Gibson Les Paul (or later a Roland-modified guitar) through a variety of amplifiers including Marshall and Fender. His playing on Starless and Bible Black and Red showed extraordinary range — from delicate acoustic passages to aggressive, jagged lead lines. 21st Century Schizoid Man's intro is one of rock's most ferocious guitar moments for its era.

1977–1984: Frippertronics / Discipline
↑ Discipline era was Fripp's most radical approach change — two guitars in polyrhythm, synth textures, and tape loop experiments represented a complete break from progressive rock guitar vocabulary.
Fripp developed Frippertronics — a live solo loop performance using two Revox tape recorders that fed back into each other, creating layers of guitar over which he improvised. This preceded Eno's ambient music collaborations. Discipline (1981) reformed Crimson with two guitars (Fripp and Adrian Belew) playing in asymmetric time signatures and African-influenced polyrhythms. Fripp used a Roland guitar synth in this era.

1994–present: THRAK / The Power to Believe / Racket
↑ Late Fripp used guitar modelling to access tonal range without physical amp rigs — consistent with his technology-adoption throughout career, from tape loops to digital modelling.
Multiple subsequent King Crimson lineups explored different tonal territory. The 21st Century Crimson (2014-2021, seven members including three drummers) used Fripp's Fernandes guitar and Roland VG series guitar modelling. He retired from live performance in 2023. His Guitar Craft school and league of crafty guitarists extended his pedagogical influence.
