Scott Henderson

Scott Henderson — Tone Evolution

Scott Henderson is a fusion guitarist who has worked with Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, and as a member of Tribal Tech. His approach combines jazz vocabulary with a heavy blues-rock tone — a Les Paul through a Marshall applied to jazz harmony creates an instantly recognisable sound.

1985–1995: Tribal Tech / Dog Party

Tribal Tech (with bassist Gary Willis) fused jazz composition with rock-level volume and distortion. Henderson used a Les Paul through a Marshall — an unusual choice for jazz, but deliberately so. His right-hand attack was aggressive and his vibrato wide; his harmonic vocabulary was jazz-sophisticated but the delivery was rock. Tribal Tech's Spears, Nomad, and Dog Party albums built a strong following in the fusion world.

1996–present: Tore Down House / Solo Work

Tore Down House revealed the blues foundation under the jazz sophistication — the same rig, a more elemental musical language.

Tore Down House (1997) was Henderson's blues-focused solo debut — stripped back to a trio context, showing his Albert King and SRV influences. He has continued alternating between fusion (Tribal Tech) and blues contexts. He teaches at GIT/Berklee. His rig evolved to include a Bludotone amplifier and PRS guitars for some periods, but Les Paul/Marshall remains his identity.
