Sonny Landreth — Tone Evolution
Sonny Landreth is the world's foremost slide guitar specialist — his technique of fretting behind the slide to add intervals and chords to slide notes is uniquely his own. His Fender Stratocaster tone through a Fender amp gives his Cajun-blues sound a warm, resonant character.
1972–1992: Clifton Chenier / John Hiatt
Landreth developed his technique playing Cajun and zydeco music — Clifton Chenier's band gave him deep roots in Louisiana blues. His fretting-behind-the-slide technique allows chord inversions and harmonics impossible with conventional slide. He used a Stratocaster with high action (raised for slide clearance) through a Fender Super Reverb. His work with John Hiatt (Riding with the King band) brought him wider exposure.

1992–present: Outward Bound / Blacktop Run
↑ Solo career added Mesa/Boogie to the Fender combination — the Boogie's warmth and sustain complemented the Super Reverb's clean brightness, giving Landreth more dynamic range within the slide context.
Outward Bound (1992) was his breakthrough as a solo artist. Subsequent albums — South of I-10, From the Reach, Blacktop Run — built a devoted following. He became an Eric Clapton (Crossroads Festival) fixture and a guitarist's guitarist. His tone evolved slightly — a Mesa/Boogie Mark V was incorporated alongside the Fender amp, adding warmth and sustain. The Stratocaster remained central.
