One of Steve's most reverb-heavy settings — the reverb is a primary component of the tone, not just an effect. The long decay creates a halo around each note that makes the guitar sound like it exists in a large acoustic space.

Technique

How to Play It

Extreme slow vibrato with gradual depth increase — Vai begins each sustained note with no vibrato and slowly increases the depth over the course of the sustain, creating an organic, breathing quality. Volume swells via the guitar volume knob add further expressiveness.

Achievable With

Any guitar with high-sustain neck pickup → clean amp → Boss RV-6 or Strymon BigSky reverb (large room, 4–5 second decay) → subtle chorus or pitch shimmer (TC Electronic HOF 2). The playing technique matters more than the specific gear.
