Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
The debut album opener — Tosin's 8-string guitar tone through the Axe-Fx processor creates a hyper-articulate high-gain sound where even the fastest slap-bass-style attacks on the low strings retain individual note definition. The extended range guitar allows the guitar to function simultaneously as bass and lead instrument.
Signal Chain
- 1Ibanez RG2228 8-string (DiMarzio Ionizer pickups)
- 2Axe-Fx Ultra (Mesa Boogie simulation)
- 3Mesa Boogie Traditional 4×12
Amp Settings
High gain with mid-scoop — the 8-string requires careful mid management to prevent the extended low range from becoming muddy. Scooping the mids keeps the low notes tight and defined.
Technique
How to Play It
Slap-bass technique applied to 8-string guitar — Tosin uses his thumb to slap the lowest strings of the 8-string (replacing a bass player) while simultaneously playing lead guitar lines on the upper strings. This creates a band-in-a-box effect.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
8-string guitar (Ibanez RGD, Schecter Hellraiser) → high-gain amp or Axe-Fx → study slap bass technique (thumb slap + finger pop) and adapt it to the bottom two strings of the 8-string.
