Pedalboard Signal Chain Order — The Definitive Guide
Signal chain order is one of the most discussed topics in guitar effects. Every effect pedal processes whatever signal it receives. When you change the order of pedals, you change what each pedal is processing — and the results can be dramatically different.
This guide explains the standard order, why each pedal goes where it does, and when breaking the rules produces interesting results.
Why Order Matters
Each pedal is a processor. It takes the signal coming in, modifies it, and outputs the result. The next pedal in the chain receives the modified signal.
If you put a reverb before a distortion, the distortion processes the reverb-soaked signal — the reverb's spatial information is compressed and saturated alongside the guitar. If you put the distortion before the reverb, the reverb processes the distorted signal — adding space and depth to the saturated tone.
Both are valid sounds. The distortion-before-reverb is conventional because it usually sounds better. The reverb-before-distortion is used intentionally in shoegaze and ambient music for the compressed, washed quality it produces.
Understanding the principle allows you to choose deliberately rather than accidentally.
The Standard Order
Guitar → Tuner → Wah → Compression → Overdrive/Distortion/Fuzz → Modulation → Delay → Reverb → Amp
1. Tuner (First)
The tuner needs the cleanest possible signal from the guitar to accurately read pitch. Putting effects before the tuner means the tuner reads a modified signal, which can cause inaccuracies.
Additionally, most bypass tuner pedals mute the signal while tuning — this must happen before any effects would colour the signal.
Always first. No exception.
2. Wah (Second — or Before Gain)
Wah pedals are filter effects. They work by sweeping a bandpass filter across the frequency spectrum. The wah works on the natural dynamics of the guitar signal — it responds to how the input signal's frequencies interact with its filter.
Before gain: The wah filter works on the clean guitar signal, producing a more vocal, frequency-focused effect. This is the standard rock and blues position.
After gain: The wah filters an already-distorted signal. This produces a sharper, more aggressive filter sweep that some players prefer for heavily distorted solos.
Special case — Fuzz: If you use a vintage Fuzz Face-style fuzz, the fuzz should be directly after the guitar (no tuner or wah buffer before it), because the fuzz circuit is impedance-sensitive and sounds wrong through a buffer. In this case: Guitar → Fuzz Face → Wah (if wah is a buffered bypass unit) → other pedals.
3. Compression (Third)
Compressors work best on the cleanest possible signal, before any distortion. Placing compression here:
- Evens out the pick attack before it hits the gain pedal (more consistent saturation)
- Adds sustain to notes that then feed into the gain pedal with more sustain
- Controls the dynamic range of the signal going into the amp
Compression after distortion: Also used intentionally. Post-distortion compression evens out the dynamics of the distorted signal, producing a more levelled, "squished" tone. This is used in modern metal for a more processed sound.
4. Gain Pedals (Overdrive, Distortion, Fuzz)
Gain pedals process the compressed, filtered signal from the previous stages. They add harmonic content through clipping.
Gain pedal order among multiple gain pedals: When using multiple gain pedals, order matters for their interaction:
- Boost before gain: A boost (or low-gain overdrive with level high) feeding into an overdrive or distortion makes the following pedal work harder and tightens the low end. This is how SRV used the Tube Screamer before a cranked Fender.
- Overdrive before distortion: The overdrive further saturates the distortion's input, tightening the sound and adding clarity at high gain.
- Fuzz first: Fuzz circuits are generally impedance-sensitive and work best directly from the guitar. If you use a fuzz with other gain pedals, put the fuzz earliest in the gain section.
5. Modulation (Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Tremolo, Vibrato)
Modulation effects add movement and texture by modulating the signal in various ways — varying pitch slightly (chorus), shifting phase (phaser), creating a through-zero effect (flanger), or varying the amplitude (tremolo).
After gain: Standard position. The modulation processes the fully saturated, gained signal and adds movement to the distortion. Chorus after distortion adds thickness to heavy rhythm tones.
Before gain (alternative): Sometimes used intentionally. A phaser or flanger before distortion creates a different interaction — the modulation changes the frequency content, and the distortion compresses and harmonically enhances the modulated signal. This can produce unusual, swirling textures.
Common modulation positions:
- Tremolo: Usually after gain, some players put it in the effects loop
- Chorus: After gain, before delay
- Phaser: After gain, before delay
- Flanger: After gain, before delay
6. Delay (Second to Last)
Delay comes after gain and modulation for a specific reason: the delay should repeat the complete, processed signal — including any modulation effects. If you put modulation after delay, the modulation processes the delay repeats differently from the original signal, creating timing inconsistencies.
Key delay positions:
- Standard: After modulation, before reverb
- In the effects loop: Some players route delay into the amp's effects loop (after the preamp stage). This means the delay repeats the preamp-distorted signal without the signal going through the preamp again. This is standard for high-gain players who want clean, defined delay repeats.
Tap tempo: For rhythmically synced delay (dotted eighth, quarter note, triplet), a tap tempo function lets you match the delay to the song's tempo in real time.
7. Reverb (Last)
Reverb simulates the acoustic reflections of a physical space. It goes last because it should be applied to the complete, processed signal — adding the sense of the guitar existing in a room.
Reverb before delay: Unusual but used in shoegaze and ambient music. Delay then repeats the reverb-soaked signal, creating an increasingly diffuse, atmospheric wash.
In the effects loop: Many players route reverb into the effects loop for the same reason as delay — so the reverb tail is clean and defined rather than processed through the preamp.
The Effects Loop
Most modern tube amplifiers include an effects loop — an insert point in the circuit between the preamp section and the power amp section. Effects placed in the loop are not processed by the preamp; they receive the preamp-saturated signal directly.
What goes in the effects loop:
- Time-based effects (delay, reverb) — so that the repeats and tails are clean
- Some modulation effects — particularly tremolo, which can interfere with amp voicing if placed in the front of the amp

- Wah
- Compression
- Gain pedals
- Boost pedals
Common Signal Chain Mistakes
Wah after distortion unintentionally: The wah sounds different after gain. Not wrong, but surprising if unexpected.
Tuner after other pedals: Inaccurate pitch reading and the tuner mute affecting effects tails.
Reverb before delay: The delay repeats the reverb, creating a wash rather than defined repeats. Sometimes intentional.
Buffer pedal before Fuzz Face: Dramatically changes the fuzz circuit's character, typically for the worse.
Compressor after distortion unintentionally: Squashes the dynamic character of the distortion. Again, sometimes intentional.
Breaking the Rules
Every "wrong" order has been used intentionally by professional players:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does order matter for a simple overdrive-delay setup? Yes. Guitar → Overdrive → Delay is standard. The delay repeats the overdriven signal. Reversed (guitar → delay → overdrive), the overdrive saturates the echo repeats, creating a more compressed, blurry result.
