The definitive American high-gain amp — originally released as the EVH 5150 II, the 6505+ became the most widely used metal amp in the world after Van Halen's endorsement ended. Two channels (Rhythm and Lead), EL34 power section, and a tightness and articulation on palm-muted rhythms that has defined two decades of heavy metal and metalcore production. The 6505+ baseline — Pre Gain at 7 with Resonance at 6 for the tight, authoritative low end that defines modern metal palm mutes. Running an overdrive pedal (TS9 or SD-1 with Gain at minimum, Level at maximum) in front tightens the low end further and adds the mid-push that helps the lead channel cut through a band mix. This is the standard starting point for most professional metal engineers.
Slightly lower Pre Gain for note definition on complex chord voicings — metalcore's open-chord breakdowns and djent-influenced riffs need more note separation than maximum saturation allows. Maximum gain with tight low end and high Resonance — death metal's extremely fast picking and deep downtuning require maximum preamp saturation and the tightest possible low-end response. Resonance at 7 and Low at 6 may seem contradictory but the Resonance control's power-amp tightening compensates for the additional Low-frequency content. Mid slightly scooped (4) for the traditional death metal tone; use a boost pedal in front for the tightest possible low-end definition.
Lower Pre Gain and looser Resonance — the 6505+ at lower gain settings produces a different character from its metal personality: a punchy, dynamic crunch that works for hard rock without the full saturation. Resonance at 4 allows the low end more natural movement, suited to chord-based hard rock playing rather than precision palm-muted riffing. This is not the 6505+'s strongest application — a Marshall DSL or JCM800 typically sounds more natural for classic hard rock — but it is usable.
The 6505+ as a blues-rock amp — unusual but effective with single-coil guitars. Low Pre Gain (4) produces a touch-sensitive character where picking attack determines breakup; raised Post Gain engages power amp dynamics. Mid at 7 and lower High give warmth; lower Resonance and Presence keep the top end soft. Periphery's signature tight djent tone — Mansoor has discussed using the 6505+ (and its successor the 6534+) with a Maxon OD808 or Ibanez TS9 in front (Gain at 0, Level at maximum). The overdrive acts purely as a mid-boost and low-end tightener. His Mid setting is higher than default and Resonance is high for maximum palm-mute tightness. The tight, articulate low end on Periphery records that distinguishes djent from standard metal is primarily Resonance and the overdrive boost, not the amp settings alone.
Trivium's lead guitarist used the 6505+ across their most commercially successful period (Ascendancy through Shogun). Heafy's setting is more conventional than Mansoor's djent approach — Pre Gain at 7 for full saturation, standard EQ with slightly raised Resonance for tightness, Presence at 6 for the aggressive upper-mid bite his lead tone requires. He has confirmed using a TS9 in front for the same low-end tightening approach as most professional 6505+ players.
Kerry King used the 5150 (precursor to the 6505+) on Slayer's most aggressive records. His approach maximises aggression at the expense of warmth: high Presence (8) and high Treble produce the extremely cutting, aggressive upper-mid character of Slayer's guitar tone. Scooped Mid (4) and lower Low (4) give the Slayer guitar tone its characteristically thin, cutting quality that works in context of the Slayer bass's full low end. Not a tone to copy in isolation but effective in context.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- An overdrive pedal in front of the 6505+ with Gain at zero and Level at maximum is the most important upgrade you can make. The TS9, SD-1, or MXR OD+ tightens the low end, adds mid-push, and makes the amp significantly more useful in a live mix without changing the core 6505+ character.
- Raise Mid above 5 for live use. The 6505+ scoops mids by default and disappears in a dense band mix at Mid 5 or below. Mid at 6–7 is the most common adjustment engineers make when the 6505+ is recorded through a full band mix.
- Resonance above 7 on a loose or worn speaker cabinet can cause flabbiness rather than tightness. If the low end is loose at high Resonance, check the speaker — Resonance on a tight, healthy speaker produces the intended tightening effect.
- The 6505+ takes 20–30 minutes of warm-up to reach its tonal peak. The first 20 minutes the amp sounds noticeably looser and darker than when it is fully warmed up — always warm up before setting EQ controls for a session or gig.
- The Ultra switch on the Lead channel adds significant additional gain. Most professional metal players use the Crunch position with a boosted pedal in front rather than Ultra — Crunch position with a boost produces a tighter, more defined result than Ultra at the same overall saturation level.
