What Makes This Sound Unique
Slightly more radio-friendly than the Bug-era fuzz — Start Choppin' has a tighter, more defined rhythm tone with the lead still using the characteristic Mascis wall of gain. The production is more polished but the essential Jazzmaster/Marshall combination is unchanged.

Amp Settings
Slightly less extreme than Freak Scene — the 1993 production has more separation. Boss DS-1 used for rhythm sections to tighten the attack. Lead sections: the DS-1 bypassed and Marshall alone for the more organic, singing sustain tone.
Technique
How to Play It
Tight downstroked rhythm with driving 4/4 energy — the Where You Been era J Mascis was writing more structured pop-rock songs without losing the guitar intensity. The rhythm playing is more precise and forward than the Bug era.
