- Keep the amp clean with plenty of headroom — Garcia never used heavy distortion
- The Mutron III (or Q-Tron clone) envelope filter is the single most important effect
- Use a Strat or Strat-style guitar in the middle or neck position for warmth
- Dynamics are everything: vary picking attack heavily between phrases
