Technique
Key Tone Tips
- Keep the amp clean with plenty of headroom — Garcia never used heavy distortion
- The Mutron III (or Q-Tron clone) envelope filter is the single most important effect
- Use a Strat or Strat-style guitar in the middle or neck position for warmth
- Dynamics are everything: vary picking attack heavily between phrases
- Play melodically — Garcia favoured pentatonic runs with chromatic approach notes
- Study 'Friend of the Devil', 'Bertha', and 'Althea' for the range of his tonal approach
Background
About Jerry Garcia's Sound
Jerry Garcia's melodic, spacious improvising combined blues, country, and jazz into a uniquely American lead voice. Custom-built guitars through a massive McIntosh PA rig gave his tone its warm, singing clarity — every Grateful Dead concert was different and his tone reflected that restless spirit.
