Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
The defining instrumental rock guitar tone of the late 1980s — the Ibanez JS guitar through a Marshall with a Tube Screamer and Roland JC-120 in stereo. The tone is bright, cutting, and harmonically rich, with sustain that allows every note of the fast passages to ring clearly without blurring into distortion. The production set the standard for "shred" album tone.
Signal Chain
- 1Ibanez JS500 or similar (humbucker/single-coil)
- 2Marshall JCM800
- 3Roland JC-120 (clean stereo layer)
- 4Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer
Amp Settings
Dual amp system: Marshall for crunch/sustain + JC-120 for clean sparkle blended in stereo. The Tube Screamer boosts the Marshall input for extra sustain in the lead sections. High presence for definition on fast runs. The blend of warm Marshall and clean JC-120 creates a more complex harmonic character than either alone.
Technique
How to Play It
Legato technique (hammer-ons/pull-offs) for speed with alternate picking for punctuation — Satriani combines both approaches fluidly. The fast sections use legato to minimize pick noise on fast runs; the rhythmic, punchy sections use alternate picking. Practice the opening riff as a picking exercise, then as a legato exercise, and choose based on feel.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Ibanez-style guitar → Tube Screamer → Marshall JCM800 or equivalent. The dual-amp stereo rig can be approximated with a stereo effects pedal (e.g. Boss CE-5 in stereo) splitting into two amps.
