What Makes This Sound Unique

The 2002 album's most densely layered guitar track — John recorded dozens of guitar overdubs to create a wall-of-sound McCartney/Beach Boys-influenced texture. The individual guitar tone is warm and clean, but it's the combination of multiple tracks panned across the stereo field that creates the distinctive By the Way album sound.

  1. 1Fender Stratocaster (multiple pickup positions, multiple tracks)
  2. 2Marshall JCM800 (varying gain settings per layer)
  3. 3Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz Tone (on heavier layers)
  4. 4TC Electronic 2290 Delay

Mid-range gain for the primary guitar tracks — the multiple overdubs create apparent heaviness from many medium-gain layers rather than one high-gain track. The reverb knits the layers together in the stereo image.

How to Play It

Overdubbing as composition — John treats each guitar layer as a separate voice in a choir, each playing a slightly different rhythmic or melodic figure. The rhythm section of the album is as much about the guitar textures as the drums and bass.

Achievable With

Strat or HSS guitar → Marshall at medium gain → record 4–6 passes slightly panned (L100, L50, R50, R100) → combine. A single-guitar approximation: Boss CE-2 Chorus + Marshall JCM800 captures the width.
