Mayer's most intimate guitar tone — clean to the point of being acoustic-adjacent. The Strat sits beneath the vocal melody rather than above it, providing gentle harmonic movement and a subtle shimmer without ever demanding attention. The gain is almost at minimum — this is barely louder than a clean practice amp. The Strat's pickups do nearly all the tonal work; the amp is just providing volume and a slight warmth. Mid-forward EQ keeps the guitar present in the mix without competing with vocals. The CE-5 chorus adds the subtle shimmer audible on the record.

How to Play It

The fingerpicking pattern uses thumb on bass strings and index+middle on treble strings — a Travis-picking derivative. The chord voicings allow open strings to ring through the changes; the fretting hand must be precise to avoid accidentally muting adjacent strings while fingers move between positions.

Budget Alternative

Achievable With

Strat (any SSS pickup configuration) into a Fender Blues Junior or equivalent at volume 3. Boss CE-5 at low intensity (depth 8 o'clock, rate 9 o'clock) adds the shimmer. Keep the gain below 4 — this tone disappears under distortion.
