Waiting on the World to Change

John Mayer · Continuum · 2006

What Makes This Sound Unique

The Continuum album's pop centrepiece showcases Mayer's SRV-influenced clean-to-breakup Strat tone. Funky chord stabs on the verse, warm sustained notes on the breaks — a masterclass in using the neck pickup's warmth without getting muddy. The Two-Rock amp provides gentle breakup on demand; the Tube Screamer pushes it slightly further for lead moments.

Edge-of-breakup rather than committed drive — the amp is just touching the threshold of distortion so picking dynamics control the saturation level. Pick hard for crunch, pick light for clean. The Tube Screamer is engaged only for slightly louder lead moments, not as a primary drive pedal here.

How to Play It

The chord stabs use Mayer's SRV-derived right-thumb muting technique: the thumb damps the low strings while the fingers sound the upper chord, giving a tight quality even without a pick. The funky staccato feel requires releasing the fretting hand pressure immediately after each stab — not palm muting but chord damping.

Achievable With

Strat neck pickup (or bridge+middle position) into a clean amp at the edge of breakup. Boss BD-2 Blues Driver (gain at 9 o'clock) approximates the Two-Rock push. Add light reverb. The Tube Screamer as a boost is optional but adds the characteristic Mayer mid-push.
