Disarm
Billy Corgan · Siamese Dream · 1993
Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
A complete departure from the Big Muff wall — acoustic-forward with orchestral string arrangements. The electric guitar enters sparingly and clean. The acoustic is a 12-string Gibson for richness and shimmer. One of the most emotionally direct Pumpkins tracks.
Signal Chain
- 1Gibson J-200 12-string acoustic
- 2Fender Telecaster (clean, sparingly)
- 3orchestral string arrangement (recorded strings, not synth)
Amp Settings
The Telecaster enters very sparingly — clean and bright with moderate reverb. All emotional weight is on the acoustic and strings. Keep the electric minimal and clean; it's a texture accent, not a lead voice.
Technique
How to Play It
Gentle strumming on the 12-string acoustic — the ringing open strings create the shimmer. The bell-toll intro is a sampled bell, not guitar. Electric Telecaster uses gentle, clean fingerpicking when it enters.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
12-string acoustic (any make) for the core tone. Electric part: any clean Telecaster or Stratocaster into a clean amp with spring reverb.
