What Makes This Sound Unique

Ultra-distorted, buzzing wall of sound driven by a Big Muff Pi — this is perhaps the most direct Smashing Pumpkins tone, almost motorik in its blunt aggression. The Billy Corgan ZeroStrat (a single Fernandes sustainer pickup) adds infinite sustain on held notes.

Big Muff does the distortion — the amp is pushed but serves mainly as a power stage. Multiple guitar/amp combinations were layered in studio. The Fernandes sustainer allows the feedback notes to hold indefinitely without amp volume.

How to Play It

Aggressive downstrokes on the main riff — no fingerpicking complexity here, pure motorik attack. The Fernandes sustainer activated for the held note passages to create infinite sustain without feedback.

Achievable With

EHX Big Muff Pi (any variant) → any loud amp. The ZeroStrat sustainer is unique but a compressor + volume up can approximate the infinite sustain effect.
