What Makes This Sound Unique

Dale's signature of taking Middle Eastern and Jewish folk melodies and transforming them into surf instrumentals — the Hava Nagila arrangement became one of his most famous numbers and established his Lebanese heritage's influence on surf music. The tone is slightly drier than the Misirlou recording but equally reverb-heavy.

Similar to Misirlou but slightly less saturated — the folk melody of Hava Nagila sits more in the midrange, so the amp EQ keeps slightly more mid content than the more aggressively bright Misirlou setting. The spring reverb creates the characteristic "splashy" surf sound.

How to Play It

Single-note single-string runs using only downstrokes — the Middle Eastern scale (phrygian dominant, with its characteristic raised third step) translates directly to the guitar's string layout. Dale plays the melody on a single string, moving up the neck rather than using different strings, which is the traditional Middle Eastern technique adapted to guitar.
