What Makes This Sound Unique

Dale's 1990s comeback album — the tone is considerably heavier than the early Surfer's Choice recordings, with modern high-gain elements added to the surf vocabulary. The spring reverb is still prominent but the amp gain is significantly higher, creating a more aggressive surf-metal hybrid sound.

How to Play It

The same downpicking approach from the 1960s applied at higher gain and heavier distortion — Dale didn't alter his fundamental technique for the modern recordings. The combination of his unique picking mechanics with the heavier distortion is what makes Tribal Thunder sound different from both pure surf and pure metal.

Achievable With

Strat → Boss DS-1 or overdrive pedal → Fender amp with reverb cranked → the Mesa or high-gain option gives the modern aggression. Pulp Fiction's use of Misirlou introduced Dale to an entirely new audience in 1994; Nitrus shows what that attention produced musically.
