Misirlou
Dick Dale · Surfers' Choice · 1962
Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
The surf guitar tone that became universally recognisable through Pulp Fiction — Dick Dale's Stratocaster through a custom Fender Showman produces the loudest, most trebly guitar tone in 1962 popular music. Dale required Leo Fender to build increasingly powerful amps because he kept burning out speakers at his surf concerts.
Signal Chain
- 1Fender Stratocaster (custom 'The Beast', left-handed played right-handed)
- 2Fender Showman Amplifier (custom-built 85W)
- 3Fender JBL D130 15-inch speaker (never burned out)
- 4Reverb tank (spring reverb, Fender-custom)
Amp Settings
Maximum treble and presence — Dale wanted the most cutting, brightest possible guitar tone. The spring reverb is turned up to simulate the wet, reverberant sound of a beachside concert hall.
Technique
How to Play It
Single-string tremolo picking — Misirlou is built on a single descending scale run played with extremely rapid alternate picking on a single string. Dale uses a heavy 60-gauge string-gauge for resistance and plays left-handed, creating a different physical tension than conventional stringing.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Stratocaster → Fender Showman or any Fender amp with spring reverb (reverb at 7+) → treble 9, presence 9 → practice the Misirlou pattern: single-string descent using Middle Eastern scale (starting on E: E–D#–D–C–B). Maximum reverb is mandatory.
