One of the most iconic opening guitar figures in rock — an arpeggiated Am-G-F-G minor sequence played with immaculate picking clarity. The MXR Phase 90 (yellow "script" version) adds a slow, subtle swirl that stops just short of dominating the clean picking. The "brown sound" here is mid-gain rather than maximum distortion.

The Phase 90 is set slow (speed knob at 9 o'clock) for a gentle swirl without muddying the arpeggio clarity. The yellow "script" Phase 90 is notably more transparent than the later "block" logo version.

How to Play It

The opening arpeggio is played entirely with a pick — no fingerpicking. Each note must be cleanly separated; the trick is letting each note ring slightly into the next without fully sustaining (not a staccato figure, not a legato blur). The chord voicings are non-standard open-string positions that give the descending melodic line across the top strings.

Achievable With

Humbucker guitar + MXR Phase 90 (EVH yellow version) + Marshall or equivalent at gain 7. The EVH Phase 90 recreates the script circuit; the standard orange version is more intense and less appropriate here.
