Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
Bonamassa at his most Allman Brothers — the slide guitar tone here echoes Duane Allman and Dickey Betts directly. The open tuning, slide glass, and pushed Fender amp create a warm, resonant bottleneck tone very different from the standard LP-into-Marshall approach. This track shows his stylistic range.
Signal Chain
- 1Gibson Les Paul (open E tuning)
- 2glass slide (Dunlop 215)
- 3Fender Vibro-King or Princeton
Amp Settings
Fender-style warmth for slide — different from the British amp character of his standard tone. Slide guitar benefits from a rounder, more organic distortion character than a Marshall. Reverb more generous for the resonant, ringing quality of open tuning slide. Open E raises the bass strings, adding weight.
Technique
How to Play It
Open E slide in the Allman Brothers tradition — glass slide on the ring or pinky finger, laid flat across the strings. The challenge is intonation: the slide must sit exactly over the fret wire (not between frets) to play in tune. Additionally, unused strings must be muted with the fretting hand fingers to prevent sympathetic ringing.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Guitar in open E (EBEG#BE) → glass slide → warm Fender-style amp with reverb. Setup matters: higher action reduces fret buzz when the slide contacts strings.
