What Makes This Sound Unique

Les Paul and Mary Ford's most famous recording — the combination of Paul's multi-tracked guitar and Ford's harmonised vocals created a sound so unprecedented that Capitol Records initially didn't know how to categorise it. The guitar tone is warm, clear and slightly compressed from the tape saturation.

Gentle tape compression from running the tape recorder hot — a byproduct of home studio recording in 1951 that Paul later recognised as an asset and replicated intentionally. The compression smooths the pick transient and gives the guitar a sustained, almost vocal quality that blends with Ford's voice.

How to Play It

Fluid jazz-pop single-note lines with precise vibrato — Paul's technical standard was exceptionally high. The playing sounds effortless but the coordination required to track multiple guitar parts, align them rhythmically, and perform with consistent intonation on 1951 equipment was an enormous technical feat.

Semi-hollow or humbucker guitar (neck pickup) → clean warm amp → tape-saturated preamp plugin (Waves J37, Softube Tape) to add the gentle compression. The multitrack approach requires a DAW.
