What Makes This Sound Unique
The defining Chicago electric blues tone — a Gibson semi-hollow into a Fender or small amp at the edge of breakup. The famous three-chord stop-time riff is stark and aggressive, the slide and vibrato pure Delta-to-Chicago. Muddy's tone has a dark, woody warmth from the hollowbody resonance.

Amp Settings
Small amp pushed hard for natural tube saturation — Muddy's tone was never about pedals or complex signal chains. A single guitar into a pushed small amp is all it takes. Bass prominent, treble restrained. The stop-time riff benefits from the amp's natural compression giving sustain to held chords.
Technique
How to Play It
The stop-time riff technique: three short, stabbing chord hits with silent beats between them where the band stops. The musical tension of the silence makes each attack sound more forceful. Muddy plays with a slide (bottleneck) on some passages with open G or E tuning.

Achievable With
Any semi-hollow or solid body guitar → cranked Fender Champ, Blues Junior, or small tube amp. The amp is doing the work; tone comes from the amp at the right volume. No pedals needed.
