Adam Jones' signature tone is built on Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier for warmth and sustain, with a precisely detuned Les Paul. The tone is heavy but never harsh.

Mesa Rectifier on the Vintage/Orange channel — Adam specifically uses the Vintage mode for its warmer, less compressed feel compared to the Modern mode. D standard tuning adds extra low-end weight without requiring extreme EQ. Gain moderate-high; the Rectifier does the heaviness through its natural character, not by pushing gain to maximum.

How to Play It

Precise alternate picking on complex time signatures — Tool's riffs use odd meters that require internalising the rhythmic groupings rather than counting. The right hand needs to be completely locked with Carey's kick drum. Minimal vibrato on sustained notes compared to blues-based rock.

Budget Alternative

Achievable With

Humbucker guitar (Les Paul or similar) in D standard → Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier or Peavey 6505+ → Boss NS-2. The Rectifier's specific character is hard to replicate exactly, but a 6505+ with Vintage mode-like settings gets close.
