What Makes This Sound Unique

Tool's first major statement — a heavy, midrange-forward riff with a clean chorus and a sludgy verse tone. Earlier Tool had a slightly rawer tone than the polished Lateralus/10,000 Days period. The verse riff's syncopated oddness is deceptive — it's tighter and more mechanical than it sounds. The clean chorus tone is warm and Fender-ish.

Heavier and slightly less defined than the Lateralus tone — Undertow had a rougher, less polished production. The clean chorus sections use a separate Fender-style clean amp or clean channel with significant reverb. The contrast between the heavy verse and clean chorus is the defining structural element.

How to Play It

The riff's rhythmic displacement — notes and rests placed in non-intuitive positions that create a feeling of lurching or syncopation. Learning the groove requires listening on loop until the pattern internalises. Single-note riff with heavy palm muting between the open notes.

Budget Alternative

Achievable With

Les Paul or humbucker guitar → high-gain amp (Mesa/Peavey 6505) for verse → bypass or clean channel with reverb for chorus. Channel switching or two amps.
