What Makes This Sound Unique

The opening feedback squeal into the main riff is pure germanium fuzz meeting a cranked Marshall — one of the most aggressive entries on Are You Experienced. The riff sits in a lower register than Purple Haze, giving it a heavier, more menacing quality. The Strat bridge pickup adds edge while the Fuzz Face delivers the characteristic splatty bloom on the sustained notes.

Slightly more bass weight than Purple Haze — the riff lives on the low strings and needs warmth beneath the fuzz aggression. Amp at high volume for output tube saturation. Fuzz Face interacts with the amp's input impedance: plug directly with no buffer between.

How to Play It

The feedback intro requires standing near the amp and letting the neck pickup ring — control the feedback pitch by moving toward or away from the speakers. The main riff uses a hard downstroke attack on the fuzz to trigger the characteristic bloom.

Achievable With

Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz Face Mini (germanium) into any amp cranked past 7. A Blues Junior at near-maximum volume captures the feel. The low-string riff requires tight muting between notes to keep the fuzz articulate.
