Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
Petrucci at his most technically intense — a rapid, technically demanding riff that becomes one of Dream Theater's heaviest tracks. The guitar tone is very tightly gated and defined: a high-gain Mesa Boogie with active pickups (DiMarzio LiquiFire/Crunchlab) ensures each note in the rapid passages is audible and distinct. This is not a tone for compression or muddiness.

Amp Settings
Maximum gain with high presence — the speed of the riff requires every note to speak clearly, which demands aggressive presence and tight gating. Mids slightly scooped for the clinical separation. High presence allows each attack to cut through in the rapid tremolo-picked passages.
Technique
How to Play It
Alternate-picked rapid riff at high BPM — the main riff requires completely even alternate picking at high tempo. The right hand must maintain absolute consistency; any deviation in pick depth or angle affects note articulation at speed. One of the technically demanding rhythm guitar passages in progressive metal.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Guitar with low-impedance humbuckers → Mesa Boogie at maximum gain with noise gate → high presence. Practice the riff with alternate picking at 50% speed first.
