What Makes This Sound Unique

Pat Metheny's debut and one of the most distinctive jazz guitar tones ever recorded — the Gibson ES-175 through a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 (before Metheny switched to his preferred Acoustic Control amp) produces a clean, chorus-bright sound with an airy, floating quality. The tone is warm at the low end and shimmering at the high end.

The JC-120's built-in stereo chorus is integral to the Bright Size Life tone — the wide stereo spread and the chorus shimmer on sustained notes are not recreatable with any other amp. The clean channel provides the platform.

How to Play It

Linear bebop lines over major-seventh harmonic language — Metheny's lines flow in long, unbroken streams using the bebop vocabulary but applied to more contemporary major and Lydian harmonic contexts. His right-hand position close to the fretboard produces a softer, rounder attack.

Achievable With

ES-175 or any warm archtop → Roland JC-120 (the specific chorus is important) → no other effects → practice bebop scale patterns over major seventh and Lydian chord changes at medium jazz tempo.
