Río Ancho
Paco de Lucía · Siroco · 1987
Tone Overview
What Makes This Sound Unique
Paco's mature fusion period — Siroco added jazz and world music influences to his flamenco foundation. Río Ancho features his guitar amplified for the first time in a recording context, adding sustain and presence that purely acoustic playing cannot achieve. The amplified flamenco tone retains the dry attack of the acoustic but adds projection.
Signal Chain
- 1José Ramírez flamenco guitar (with Fishman pickup system)
- 2Small PA or clean studio amplification
- 3DI into console (minimal coloration)
Amp Settings
Amplified acoustic — the pickup preserves the guitar's natural character while adding volume. The EQ is set to reduce the low-frequency boom of acoustic amplification while retaining the mid-range articulation of the flamenco technique.
Technique
How to Play It
Alzapúa (right-hand thumb technique) — a flamenco-specific technique where the thumb plucks downward and upward through strings, sounding the bass note on the downstroke and multiple treble strings on the upstroke. Creates a fuller, bass-plus-treble texture from single right-hand motions.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Nylon-string acoustic with pickup system → clean DI or acoustic amp → light reverb → study flamenco thumb technique: the downstroke-upstroke alzapúa creates a 3-layer texture (bass + harmony + melody) from a single hand motion.
