Amp Settings
The oval-hole Selmer model has a slightly warmer, more focused sound than the D-hole. This is purely the acoustic resonance of the instrument with no amplification processing — every characteristic of Django's tone comes from the guitar, strings, pick, and technique, with zero electronics in the chain.
Technique
How to Play It
Hand vibrato (whole hand oscillates on the neck) — completely different from the conventional finger vibrato of other styles. Django's vibrato is wide and slow, giving sustained notes an almost vocal, operatic quality. This technique is transferable to electric guitar but requires specific practice.

Achievable With
Selmer-style Gypsy Jazz guitar (mandatory for the tone — a conventional guitar will not produce this sound) → thick triangular pick → practice hand vibrato starting very slowly, wider than you think is correct. Anouman is a good study piece for the vibrato technique.
